Swissvoice Eurit 758 - ISDN DECT Phone - "No System" Issue resolved!

A while ago, because I needed more than 1 line at home (teenager in the house and working from a home office - enough said!) I switched from an Analogue line to ISDN with 3 telephone numbers.

I then discovered that most ISDN phones are wired and the number of DECT offerings are very limited, and the systems with 2 or more handsets even more so ... the one at the time that best suited my needs (price) was the Swissvoice Eurit 758 Duo (with 2 handsets) and for a long time I was very happy with it.

Then I started to get a  No System error ... This was at the same time as I moved home and the equipment to split the ISDN into Telephony and DSL changed so, of course, I thought that it was due to the phone provider's system and cursed each time it happened. However since it seemed to be an intermittent fault, which could be fixed by pulling all the plugs and resetting the system, I didn't chase it up to hard.

I don't know when I began to suspect that it was the Eurit 758 and nothing to do with the phone line or service provider equipment, but it was a while ago. I'd already checked the handset manual Troubleshooting Guide, The Swissvoice Website and Google'd for a fix but without any luck. Other people seemed to be having the same fault, but no one had a fix ... so I carried on "getting by".

At the end of last year, it became so bad that I could make a phone call, only by leaving the handset on the base and using the Speaker-phone function, sometimes I could pick up the phone after the call was established, other times not ... so I sent a query to Swissvoice Technical Support ... and I got the following reply:

Dear valued customer,
thank you for your enquiry. Please do a reset by first of all pull the plug out of the socket and take the battery out of the handset.and leave for at least 1 hour. After the time has elasped put the plug and the battery back in. Now you reset the telephone to default status as follows:
Procedure:
1. Press the softkey under MENU . Scroll to MAINTENANCE in the SETTINGS menu. Press OK to confirm.
2. Select the handset or base station, press RESET and press OK to confirm. The default settings are restored.
Note:
A reset deletes all preferences and lists except the directory, your personal outgoing messages, and the messages on your answering machine. After a reset, the installation assistant re-appears.
An ISDN connection needs its own S0-bus. If all seems to be done but yet the problem remains you will have to get new a new battery.
For any further questions, feel free to contact us.
With best regards

FYI: On my handset the "Base" or "Handset" choice is under the "Reset" option, not the other way around.

Anyhoo ... I tried the Reset suggested, not just for an hour - overnight!, it didn't work. The next part of the fix was to change the batteries, but I'd already used several sets of batteries (all 1.2V NiMH 800mAH as specified in the manual and as supplied with the phone) and never noticed a difference, so I didn't expect the "get a new battery" part to have much effect.

I had some new Sony CycleEnergy (1.2V 1000mAH NiMH) batteries already, so I bunged them in ... gave them a charge ... and was very surprised to see my telephone system restored to full and normal functionality, and it's been working without fault for a week now.

For clarification, I'm a contract software engineer, specialised in developing for embedded systems, and having worked on several occasions for a DECT Handset supplier. I am not at all very proficient with the Hardware side of the equation, so I do not know what the consequences of using a higher specification of battery would be - however since they are the same voltage (and the current should determined by the resistance of the circuit, not the battery) I was willing to try.

I would encourage Swissvoice to expand their Technical Support FAQ. But in the event they don't, and if anyone else has this problem, I hope this Blog Entry helps. Other than the above (which has been VERY frustrating), I've been reasonably happy with the Eurit 758 for the last 4 or 5 years.

Cheers
